Test your knowledge of how Jesus appears in the first book of the Bible. This is a short quiz, just 11 questions, it doesn’t by any stretch cover all that could be said about Jesus in Genesis… but it is fun and if you get the question correct there is often a extra bit of interesting information.
Get the question wrong and I’m afraid the computer can be a bit rude, sorry!
When you are done you’ll see your score broken into the various categories I use to report the Old Testament.

Question 1 of 11
1. Question
1 pointsThe names of every one of Jesus’ direct ancestors named in the book of Genesis means something… when you chain these name-meanings together they form prophetic statements about Jesus the Messiah. Can you put the names below into their correct birth order.
-
Abram
-
Isaac
-
Israel
-
Judah
-
Perez
-
Hezron
Correct
Well done: this can be translated as: “Raised by the Father laughing, God Prevails. Acknowledging (this)breaks out (of) a walled prison”.
- Raised by the Father – Abram, Ab=Father, Ram=Raised up
- Laughing – Isaac, (note it was for the Joy set before Him that Jesus endured the cross)
- God Prevails – Israel, Isra=Prevails, El=God.
- Acknowledging – Judah, note the name/word יהודה became “praise” because “acknowledgement” is a part of praise.
- Breaks out – Perez
- A walled place – Hezron so this can be a citadel, a walled town or a prison in its broad sense.
At some point I will post something on how these translations emerge.
Incorrect
Nope try again in short while! Get it right and there are some things to explore!

Question 3 of 11
3. Question
1 pointsOne Gospel starts with the same phrase that starts the book of Genesis and a second Gospel starts with the phrase “The book of Genesis”. Which of the following pairs of Gospels are they?
Correct
Great: John starts with the identical Greek as the Septuagint (the Greek language version of the Old Testament). And then Matthew starts with “βιβλος γενεςεως”/”biblos geneseus” which is literally “The book of lineage…(of Jesus Christ)… and literarily “The book of Genesis”.
Incorrect
Hey it’s multiple choice, you’ll get there eventually.
Hint
Really? you want a hint… read your Bible for starters!

Question 5 of 11
5. Question
1 pointsGod in visible/audible form appears several times in Genesis. The New Testament makes clear that these appearances were the pre-incarnation Jesus the Son, making the unknowable God known. These manifestations are given various titles in the Old Testament, which of the following does not appear in Genesis.
Correct
A great scholar in the making.
Incorrect
Not this time.

Question 6 of 11
6. Question
1 pointsWhen Jacob finally returned with his family to the land promised to his descendants he had a new name, Israel. He bought some land and built an Altar and called the location “El-Ehoe Israel” or “God the God of Israel”, in doing so he effectively changed the name of the wider country from Canaan to Israel. At the end of Genesis Jacob bequethed the land with the altar as an extra portion to Joseph’s family.
In the Gospel’s Jesus has a key encounter with someone in this significant location. Here for the first time Jesus uses the emphatic divine title for himself, “I, I AM”. The Greek Old Testaments way of translating God’s title “I AM I AM”
Who was this revelatory encounter with?
Correct
Well done there are several significant layers to this story in John, layers that often don’t get picked up… but understanding the significance of the location and the well is step to understanding it better.
Incorrect
Not this time.

Question 7 of 11
7. Question
1 pointsWho is the earliest character from the accounts in Genesis to be explicitly named by Jesus in his teaching?
Correct
Good choice, the gospel writers reference Adam, Seth and Noah, but Jesus only names Abel, as a martyr.
Incorrect
Bad-move-space-cadet!
-
Question 8 of 11
8. Question
1 pointsTerah was the father of Abram, the forefather of Jesus, but which of his other (named) children was also a forebear of the Christ?
Correct
Yes, Terah’s whole family seemed to be involved. It is interesting that to Hebrew ear Terah’s pagan name would have sounded like the words “Tor-ruach” or “Dove-Spirit”. It is almost as if the text was saying that the Holy Spirit was secretly working from before Abram had a clue to forge the family that would be required to produce Abraham’s the promised “seed”.
Incorrect
Not this time
-
Question 9 of 11
9. Question
1 pointsWho served Bread and Wine to Abram just before Abram “believed” the “Word of God” (Jesus) and God the Father “Reckoned this to him as righteousness”?
Correct
The King of Salem is better known as Melchizadek, an example of priest that is not a Levite. As such the New Testament treats Melchizadek as an important “type” of Christ.
Incorrect
King Tough Luck!
