This is not one of those quizes that everyone finds easy… but stick with it till the end, there are explanations and answers.
How much do you know about the people in Jesus family tree and the names and relationship of friends and family as recorded in the Gospel’s?
Please note two assumptions:
First, that the difference between Matthew’s and Luke’s ancestry for Jesus is best explained by understanding that Luke has recorded it back from the first male in Jesus physical lineage, i.e from Mary’s father Eli.
Second, that the traditions of the earliest Church fathers in regards to names and people in the Gospels are normally correct.

Question 1 of 14
1. Question
Which of the following is an Uncle to Jesus, either recognised by the early Church or determined directly from analysing the Bible.
Correct
Nice… Heggipus, writing around 180 AD recorded on that he had been told Cleopas was Joseph’s brother by the grandchildren of the apostle Jude.
Incorrect
Nope! While Medieval Christians where sure that Joseph of Arimathea was Jesus’ great-uncle on Mary’s side, there is no early church evidence for this, it is more related to myths around the Holy Grail (which Joseph supposedly bought to Britain shortly after the Crucifixion).
Elizabeth was a relative of Mary’s. So Jesus could have been Zacharias’ first cousin by marriage once removed if Zacharias’ wife Elizabeth was a first cousin to Mary, but he wasn’t an uncle and was probably a few steps further away from Jesus’ than even first cousin.
Eli is listed as Mary’s Father, and Simeon is a name I stuck in as an extra.
Question 2 of 14
2. Question
Which of these women is not a known ancestor of Jesus?
Correct
Sweet Bible knowledge!
Naomi was Ruth’s mother-in-law by Ruth’s first marriage. Ruth is Jesus ancestor but not Naomi. Bathsheba was Solomon’s mother through whom Jesus received the rights to the throne of David though, She is a family ancestor though not technically a progenitor.
Incorrect
Uh-uh-ah?
Tamar seduced her father-in-law Judah when her second husband Onan, brother to her first husband, died and Judah didn’t want to marry her to his third and final son. Ten generations later David was born of this line. Ruth is part of this same line. Milcah was Abraham’s niece and also the grand-mother of Rebekah who married Isaac.
Question 3 of 14
3. Question
Can you put these ancestors in order, from oldest to newest. This question is worth 2 marks.
Jared
Noah
Serug
Salmon
Jesse
Zerubbabel
Correct
Sort-order-tastic !!!! you are a living genius.
Incorrect
Nope… but hey, who ever reads those lists of names anyway.
Question 4 of 14
4. Question
One of Jesus’ ancestors is considered to be the first prophet in the Bible, who was he?
Correct
Woah, you are cooking on gas! Yep Enoch has a prophecy referenced in the New Testament and he called his son Methusaleh meaning “his death shall bring it” prophesying that judgment would come with Methusaleh’s death. Sure enough he died the year the flood came and took them. So the first biblical prophet.
Incorrect
No, no, no, no no. It is true that Samuel was considered to be the “prophet like Moses” who came after him but there’s the clue… he came after Moses has already prophesied his stuff. Adam is considered a prophet by Islam… but there is nothing in the Bible to back that up… Adam’s ability to see possible outcomes is anything but prophet like. Noah made boats and was the first person to make wine… for which we should be thankful, but that’s it, plus he comes after Enoch.
Question 5 of 14
5. Question
The Gospel’s mention wealthy women who supported and followed Jesus in Galilee. Which of these, (as far as we know) did not first meet Jesus in Galilee.
Correct
Correct, Martha is always presented in Bethany… there is some debate as to whether her sister Mary is also Mary Magdalene (I think she is) who is listed as following Jesus from his Galilean ministry days alongside Joanna and Suzanna.
Incorrect
Bad…Move…Space…Ca…det!
Question 6 of 14
6. Question
How many immediate brothers and sisters does the Bible mention in relation to Jesus.
Correct
Skippity-doo-dah-day you are so on your way.
Incorrect
Wrong, but OK this is a contentious issue, Catholics and Orthodox Christians hold that Mary only had Jesus, the others named and enumerated in the Bible where either step-family from a previous marriage of Joseph or cousins as “brothers” could be used in a wider sense. But this ignores that Tertullian writing at the end of the second century is emphatic that those listed are full family members of Mary and Joseph’s family and that is why they are listed alongside Mary in the Gospels.
Question 7 of 14
7. Question
You’ve already answered a question about Jesus’ uncle… but He also has two named aunts who appear in the Gospels. One we know is an aunt by comparing the four Gospels and one we know from information given to us by the Early Church Fathers. Which of the following pairs of women are both Jesus’ aunts.
Correct
“the Other Mary” as she is called is married to Clopas who we know was Joseph’s brother, She is an aunt by marriage. Salome is described in the gospels as “Mary’s Sister” and “the Mother of James and John”… so for the sharp eyed, Zebedee is also an uncle of Jesus but you were not given him as a choice on that question.
Incorrect

Question 8 of 14
8. Question
Which of Jesus ancestors was told by God that even though he was a “signet ring on My right-hand” he would be thrown off and that none of his descendents would ever “prosper on the throne of David or ruling in Judah” thereby creating a prophetic paradox for God as this man’s heir was supposed to be the messiah!
Correct
Well Done – Coniah is sometimes called Jeconiah. God fulfills the prophecy by removing him from Kingship and deporting him to Babylon. He passes on the rights to the throne, but none of his descendants are king eventually leading to Joseph. Jesus is Joseph’s heir but of course not his offspring. Jesus gets his biological connection to David through his mother.
Incorrect
Bad Luck – Technically Jesus is not a physical descendant of any of these, but he is heir to the throne through all of them. He is a physical descendant of David through his non-kingly son Nathan.
Question 9 of 14
9. Question
OK this one is a lot tougher than the last one… so less names… put Jesus non-King ancestors in order oldest to newest. There are less of them this time. This question is worth 2 marks.
Nathan
Mattatha
Menna
Melea
Correct
OK circle the option that best describes you: I got lucky/I cheated/I learnt this list for a pub quiz/I’m just really really smart.
Incorrect
Wrong, but no shame here. Your faith will do just fine despite this hole in your Christo-consciousness.
Question 10 of 14
10. Question
The Bible records a number of personal post-resurrection encounters and visions. Which of the following friends and family do we not read about seeing Jesus whilst on their own?
Correct
Well done matey! WE don’t read about James the apostle ever having a private post-resurrection encounter with Jesus, we do read about James the brother of Jesus having such a meeting. Paul relates his vision of the ascended Jesus on the road to Damascus as an on-going encounter with the risen Christ, so John the apostles visions on the Isle of Patmos must be though of this way too. Peter and Mary of course both met Jesus on their own on the first Easter Sunday.
Incorrect
Oops, been caught out here!
